NOTE: Five years ago, I left a 15-year career in advertising to work for myself in an entirely new field. Recently, I solicited questions about this for people who are considering the same. This post is part of a series where I'll be answering some of those questions. In many cases, I've combined questions that were similar.

Question:

Laura,

I'm leaving the city I was born in - although I have left before - to move to another state. I see opportunities in this new place that I simply don't have here. Additionally, many parts of my life were coming to an end so it felt like a natural point to make the leap.

However, I don't yet have a job in my new city.

I realize I may struggle for a while, but I think the struggle will be worth it. However, I keep getting the skeptical looks and subtle digs that occur when one makes a decision that others deem 'not safe.'

My question is: how did you ignore others when they showed doubts and continue to stay focused on your own internal compass? How did you explain what you were doing to people who thought you might be making a huge mistake?

One thing you can say is, look, I’m asking for support, not permission.
